TRADITIONAL VS. TANKLESS WATER HEATERS – WHICH IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

There’s been a lot of talk about the benefits of tankless water heaters in Cincinnati over the last decade, but does that mean it’s what’s right for your home? We’ll break down a few pros and cons of traditional water heaters as opposed to tankless water heaters and let you make the decision.

Traditional Water Heaters (Tank Models)

The hot water heaters you grew up with held 30-50 gallons of preheated water in a tank. The hot water gets dispensed as people wash their hands, do the dishes, do laundry, shower, etc.

These water heaters generally last about 7-12 years here in Cincinnati and cost in the range of 50% as much as tankless models. That being said, utility bills are often much higher with a traditional model, as your water heater is working to keep that 30-50 gallons of water hot around the clock, regardless of whether or not you’re using it, or even need it to be warm.

Tankless Water Heaters

Tankless water heaters work on demand to heat water as you require it. As the name would suggest, there is no store of hot water to hand, instead, there is a fast-acting mechanism that delivers hot water when you turn on the tap. (In fact, they generally deliver two to three gallons of hot water per minute when in use.)

While they initially cost somewhere in the vicinity of twice as much as a traditional water heater to purchase and install, they can also last upwards of twice as long, with a lifespan of 20+ years.

That means 20+ years of savings for you since the government-run site energy.gov says an Energy Star-rated tankless water heater can save you, on average, $100 per year on your utility bills.

There are plenty of benefits to both models. Plus, whether you use electric or gas might also affect your decision. Our master plumbers and staff will be happy to answer any questions you may have and help you figure out which model is best for your household.

One of the most important aspects of installing a new water heater is to make sure you only trust a licensed plumber with the installation. This will ensure there are no future problems created from untrained, unlicensed “shortcuts” taken.
