IS THAT A REAL PLUMBER PART II?

In our last blog post, we talked about how some of the bigger “plumbing” companies are sending out unlicensed “technicians” and passing them off as licensed plumbers. Not only is this un-ethical, but it is against local and state codes and regulations. But even more troubling than the fact that these companies chose to do business by violating state and local code and regulation is the fact that most of the companies also chose to pay their “technicians” on a commission pay system.

A lot of professions work on a commission pay system, and that is O.K., but at BEST Plumbing we do not feel that is the BEST way to pay a plumber. We think it incentivizes the wrong behavior. Think about the types of professionals who are paid on a commission pay system. Car sales, real estate sales, retail sales, etc. Most of these are sales jobs that have bigger ticket items (cars, houses) that people are familiar with, can research or comparison shop to get the BEST price. Plumbing repair is none of those things. Plumbing problems happen quickly and are unexpected. Most homeowners are not knowledgeable enough about their plumbing systems to make informed decisions about what needs to be done so they rely on their local plumber to educate them and give them the BEST advice on how to make repairs or upgrades. If that plumber is paid a percentage of what he “sells” his incentive is to advise the homeowner to make the most expensive repair possible, or to recommend un-needed repairs because it increases his paycheck.

Another reason bigger companies pay commission is that if the “technician” is not selling they do not have to pay them anything. They will hire extra “technicians” and have them sit on stand-by, costing the company nothing until they send them to an unsuspecting customer’s home. Some of these “technicians” will only get one call a day and this may be their only opportunity to make money. Would you want this guy in your home? He is going to try and squeeze as much money out of that customer as possible so he can have a paycheck and pay his bills because he may not get another call.

At BEST Plumbing we pay our licensed plumbers an hourly wage so they are not worried about their paycheck when they are in your home. Our licensed plumbers are paid when they are working for you, when they are driving to your home, when they are in training, when they are meeting inspectors, when they are on stand-by. We want our plumbers to focus on your plumbing problem, take their time and explain to you what is going on, why it happened, how it can be fixed, and how you can prevent it from happening in the future. At BEST Plumbing we want our customers to be a customer for life. We want our customers to feel comfortable and ask questions because for us an informed customer is a happy customer. The next time you have a plumbing problem make the BEST choice and call BEST Plumbing at (513) 342-0323 . And if you chose not to call us at least ask the “technician” in your home if he is licensed, and is he paid on commission. It could save you a lot of time and a lot of money!
